About

New Zealand artist Sue Syme graduated with a Diploma of Fine Arts (Otago School of Fine Arts - Printmaking major) in 1981. Sue has been a practicing artist ever since, working across a variety of mediums.

Originally Sue worked mostly in water colour, pen and ink depicting busy social settings, cafes, parties, street life etc. During this time she won the Telecom Art Award for a West Coast pub scene.

After completing her Diploma of Teaching, Sue taught printmaking for a few years part-time at the Te Tai Poutini Polytech in Greymouth. Whilst there she produced a body of work in wood cuts and etchings. Around this time Sue was asked to participate in the Muka Youth Print Workshop in Auckland creating a series of lithographs, which toured New Zealand.

Sue spent most of her early career living and painting on the West Coast of the South Island but in 2006 relocated to Picton, a port town in the beautiful Marlborough Sounds. She continues to be inspired by her environment and it’s people, painting predominantly in oils on canvas and water colour on paper.

Sue exhibits regularly throughout New Zealand, her art works are sold in galleries nationwide and she welcomes the commission work that this exposure generates. If you would like to discuss a commission or other creative opportunity, please contact Sue at suesyme@live.com.
